The Middlebury Women's Lacrosse team will be hosting a clinic and 5v5 tournament on Sunday, March 4th for competitive players in grades 10-12. Players can register with a team or as an individual. Registration forms are due on February 20th. Hope to see you there!

It was great to hear from Ellen Halle (above - sporting her "field outfit" complete with camo hat) this week and hear what she is up to! Ellen writes....

"My program just finished a 3 week homestay in San Pedro, just outside of San Jose. While we were there we had intensive spanish classes for 4-5 hours a day as well as few lectures for our other classes. It was sooo fun to be in the city and I had a great time. My host family was great, they all lived together in 4 houses in a gated community and my "mom" was an 80 year old sparkplug who was so funny- she still had a lot of zest for life and would ramble on and on in spanish gesticulating wildly while i had no idea what she was saying so i would just nod and say "si, si." Now we're back at the biological station in the southern part of the country near the Panamanian border. We just chose our research project topics for our final project which is a 4 week research thing- I'm going to be doing a research project on food security and nutritional status of migrant indigenous populations as compared to indigenous populations that are non-migratory. Should be coool.

The past weekend some friends and I went on a trip to see sea turtles laying eggs/baby turtles hatching, and the week before that we went bungee jumping! Scariest thing ever but so much fun."

Lacrosse The Nations- Scoop For Loot this weekend!

This weekend, the Middlebury lacrosse team has organized a fundraiser for Lacrosse the Nations. Lacrosse the Nations is a nonprofit that aims to sustainably improve education and health while creating hope and opportunity for disadvantaged children both domestically and globally. Lacrosse is the avenue by which these needs and goals are addressed; the sport serves as a forum for teaching life skills and health education. LTN's pilot program is located in La Chureca, a trash dump community on the outskirts of Managua, Nicaragua. LTN has partnered with the School of Hope in La Chureca, implementing a PE and after-school program that aims to positively impact the lives of La Chureca's youth.

Lacrosse the Nations boasts strong connections with Middlebury. Not only did one of the organization's founders, Brad Corrigan, attend Middlebury and play on the Men's Lacrosse Team, but for the past few years collegiate lacrosse players have been traveling to La Chureca to volunteer with the School of Hope and Lacrosse the Nations' program. Among the Middlebury affiliated players to travel to La Chureca are Darren Scheufele '11, Dave Campbell '09, former women's assistant coach Reid Berrien '08 and one of our 2010 team captains Carrie Sparkes '10. Now Carrie is living in La Chureca as the Lacrosse Program Director for Lacrosse the Nations' program in Guatemala. You can read her blog here:http://lacrossethenations.org/.

In the spirit of Middlebury Women's Lacrosse and Lacrosse the Nations' admirable work in Nicaragua, we ask that you consider participating in our fundraiser. We hope that you will donate $1 for every ground ball that our team collects and $1 for every goal that we score in this weekend's big NESCAC matchup against the Trinity College Bantams. Whether or not you are attending this weekend's game, you can still participate-- we will email you the stats upon completion of the game and you can donate via check. Panthers overcome Polar Bears

The panthers had a thrilling 16-12 win against Bowdoin this afternoon in bright and sunny 60 degree weather. Middlebury played with a polished attack, clean midfield transition, and a relentless attitude that helped them to bring home the win. To see the game write up, click here. What do you love most about being a member of the Middlebury Lax team?

I love being part of a team that has so much heart. Every player shows up, ready to give 110%, ready to make themselves and each other better than they were the day before. What I love most though, is the amount of support there is on this team. In every drill and every game, my teammates never fail in making me feel like I can do absolutely anything.

What is your favorite color?

Blue FOR SURE. I bleeeeeeed blue.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

The library. Not just because I LOVE academia ;) but because it has amazing people watching. Nothing beats walking a lap around the second floor just to see whats up!

What is your "favorite" conditioning?

The 25yrd sprints we did with a partner. Even though we ran back and forth for what seemed like eternity, you not only work hard to push yourself, but you work hard for your teammate.

Who on our team inspires you the most?

So many people on this team inspire me, so its hard to say who inspires me the most, BUT Margaret Souther is with out a doubt one of the most hard working individuals I have ever met. She gets those cRAzzY eyes and you can tell there is no stopping her! Chase Delano also inspires me. She is like a second mother, but way goofier. Not to mention, she has the most deceptive shot on this side of the Mississippi!!

What was your favorite part of spring trip this year?

The spring trip this year was nuts!! Besides watching about 16 episode of The OC, visiting the monuments late night in DC was incredible.

PANTHERS POUNCE ON CAMELS

Sally Ryan scored five times to lead the 13^th ranked Middlebury College women’s lacrosse team to a 15-9 win at Connecticut College Saturday. The Panthers improve to 4-0 with a 3-0 mark in conference play, while the Camels fall to 2-4 with a record of 0-3 in the NESCAC.

Ryan added six draw controls, six caused turnovers and three ground balls for the winning side. Chase Delano chipped in with three goals and an assist for the Panthers.

In a see-saw first half, Barone knotted the game up in its third tie at three with a free position goal at the 12:45 mark.

The Panthers scored the final four goals at the half as a part of a 9-0 run to seize control of the contest. Ryan put the Panthers on top for good, dropping in a bounce shot of the turf with 11:39 to go and then added a free position marker to make it a 5-3 game with 8:14 to go. Delano and Ellen Halle scored goals at the end of the half and the visitors carried a 7-3 advantage into the break.

Ryan scored three of the team’s first five goals in the second stanza, capping the 9-0 run with another free position goal at the 16:31 mark to make it a 12-3 game.

However, the Camels responded with a mini 3-0 scoring spurt of their own. Izzy Marx won a draw and played the ball ahead to Brazel, who made a nifty feed to Driscoll for a one-timer at the 12:10 mark to make it a 12-6 game.

The Panthers scored the next three goals and were able to hold on for the 15-9 win.

Junior netminder Lily Nguyen made seven stops for the Panthers and was relieved by Alyssa Palomba, who stopped four Camel shots in relief duty.

100th GOAL!!!

A BIG Congrats to Sally Ryan for scoring her 100th goal yesterday against Babson. Her 100 goals have come in 51 career games as a panther. GO SAL!

Middlebury outscored Babson 10-4 in the second half on its way to a 14-6 win over the Beavers (3-5) on Kohn Field. The 13^th-ranked Panthers improve to 3-0 on the season, with Sally Ryan surpassing the 100 career goal mark in the game.

Middlebury jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a free position goal from Michaela Colbert in the middle at the 21:23 mark. Babson answered with a nice feed from Alyssa Hood to Erin Daley to make it a 3-1 game before Elizabeth Garry scored from the left side with a shot to the far post to increase the lead to 4-1. Morgan Lockwood netted a late first half goal by driving the length of the field to make it a 5-2 game at the break.

Following the second of the game from Garry, Sally Ryan scored for the second time, earning her 100^th career tally cutting to the goal with a high shot to the right corner. Her 100 goals have come in 51 career games as a Panther.

Stephanie Gill converted a free position at the 24:54 mark to increase Middlebury’s lead to 7-2. Jamie Spang scored in transition for the Beavers, before the Panthers ran off three more goals, making it a 10-3 game with 17:08 remaining.

Babson cut the lead to 10-5 on tallies from Taylor Kralovenec and Alyssa Hood, before Ellen Halle answered at 7:29. Gill followed with her second and third tallies of the game, increasing the Middlebury advantage to 13-5. The teams exchanged late goals, including the first of her career for Middlebury’s Dee Miller, making it a 14-6 final.

Ryan and Gill’s three goals apiece paced the Panthers, while Halle and Garry each scored twice. Ryan added nine ground balls and six caused turnovers in the contest. Six different players scored for Babson, with Hood earning a goal and an assist.

Lily Nguyen made nine saves in 58:27 to earn the win, while Sarah Macary made 12 stops for the Beavers.

Get to know panther Dee Miller ('14)

1.) Tell us a little bit why you love playing Middlebury Lacrosse

I love walking out onto Kohn field everyday, surrounded by a team full of fun, amazing girls and coaches that I know will always have my back. I love knowing how every one of us is so committed to the same collective goal, working hard day in and day out, pushing each other, and bringing out the best in each teammate. I'm so proud to be a member of the Middlebury women's lacrosse team. Not to mention, we've no doubt got the best locker room dance moves in the NESCAC!

2.) Why did you choose Middlebury?

Wellll, I'll give my mom some credit, because it definitely took some convincing on her part to get me up to visit Vermont in the first place. But, the second I stepped onto campus I absolutely knew that Midd was the place for me. After meeting Missy and learning about the great tradition of Middlebury women's lacrosse, I was sold. I remember driving home afterwards and telling my mom "This is where I'm going to go to school!"

3.) What is your favorite color?

Hmmm... don't really have a favorite, but if I had to pick I'd probably say blue.

4.) What is your favorite spot on campus?

Favorite spot on campus... definitely the dining hall after practice. I love just hanging out, eating a delish peanut butter, banana and honey panini, and goofing off with the team after a tough practice. Sometimes I wish dinner would last forever, so I would never have to go do my homework!

5.) What is your "favorite" conditioning?

Well aside from the obvious favorite, Chipman hill, I'd have to say the partner sprints where you take turns running beside your teammates... It's so much more fun to be running next to someone who is pushing you and telling you to run harder because its almost "showa time!"

6.) Do you have any pre-game rituals?

I like to eat a an english muffin with hard boiled eggs, hit up the whirlpool in the training room with all my peeps, and of course dance a bit, just to keep the muscles loose.

PANTHERS BEAT CARDINALS 15-5

Middlebury broke open a 1-1 game against visiting Wesleyan with a five-goal run in the first half en route to a 15-5 win over the Cardinals at Kohn Field on Saturday. The 13^th ranked Panthers improve to 2-0 on the year, with both victories against NESCAC opponents, while Wesleyan drops to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Ellen Halle scored three goals during the first half run, including back-to-back tallies, eventually capping the five goal burst at 9:43 off a feed from Sally Ryan for a 6-1 advantage. Each team exchanged a pair of goals during the final minutes of the first half, setting the score at 8-3 at the intermission.

Ryan added two more goals to start the second half, including her first tally where she forced a Wesleyan turnover setting up her own score at 20:32. Wesleyan answered with a pair of goals by Kaylin Berger, sandwiched around a Panther goal by Chase Delano, for an 11-5 deficit with 11:27 left to play. Middlebury answered with the final four goals of the contest including two more by Ryan, who finished with a game-high five scores.

Ryan’s five-goal, one assist performance led all scorers, as Halle added four goals and Margaret Souther scored a pair and assisted on one more. Lily Nguyen earned the victory in net for Middlebury, playing 57:42, making 12 saves while allowing five goals. Alyssa Palomba relieved Nguyen with 2:18 left in the game, making one save.

Berger scored four of Wesleyan’s five goals, as Catherine Taibi accounted for the fifth and Clair O’Brien notched the lone assist for the Cardinals. Maggie Drowica played all 60 minutes in net, making 11 saves as she allowed 15 goals.

In honor of Yeardley Reynolds Love and the One Love Foundation, the Middlebury Panthers purchased "One Love" t-shirts to demonstrate their support.

The One Love Foundation is a tribute to Yeardley, who wore #1 as a lacrosse player at both Notre Dame Prep and UVA. One Love Foundation's driving goal is to encourage and develop in children and young adults four qualities that Yeardley exemplified.. service, kindness, humility and sportsmanship... that together add up to One Love.

The story behind "Burn the Boats" - our 2011 team quote

This year's team quote, "BURN THE BOATS", comes from a story about Hernan Cortes, a Spanish Conquistador who went in search of and captured a large Aztec treasure. Before he left for the New World, he gathered the troops he would need and told them the story of how their life would change after they captured the treasure. The day finally came for Cortes and his troops to sail. Each day on their journey, he told his troops the same story about the gold and how it would change their lives.

When the crew reached the New World, they camped along the shore for a few weeks and each day Cortes told his troops the same story about the treasure. Finally, the troops were restless and were eager to find the gold. Cortes knew they were ready. He assembled the troops and gave them one last order - "Burn the boats!" The men were perplexed, but did as Cortes had said. Cortes explained to them that by burning the boats, they were eliminating any reason they had to fall back to safety - it was either capture the treasure or die.

After the troops burnt the boats, they marched off and captured the treasure.

CHASE DELANO SALLY RYAN

What is your favorite inspirational Quote?

CHASE: When I was a freshman in high school and going through a bit of a slump in my lacrosse season, my senior captain gave me this quote to read before every game for encouragement. It keeps me focused and motivated, and has a lot of sentimental value for me.

“Believe in yourself, be strong, never give up no matter what the circumstances are. You are a champion and will overcome the dreaded obstacles. Champions take failure as a warning opportunity, so take in all you can and run with it. Be your best, and don’t ever, ever, ever give up.”

What is your favorite food?

C: I absolutely adooore artichokes, zucchini casserole, a nice medium-rare steak, and my mom's chocolate cake, of course!

S: tie between chicken parm, ice cream, and peanut butter and jelly (ew what if i ate those all together...yikes!)

What do you love most about lacrosse?

C: Playing with my hair down. Hah, just kidding, but I did do that once. I love being on the circle during the draw control and the satisfaction of jumping higher than that girl next to you and winning possession of the ball.

S: What I love most about lacrosse is stepping out on beautiful Kohn field every day with my 20 best friends and working together to achieve a common goal and going above and beyond what we ever thought we were capable of doing. I love the energy, the passion, and the emotion along with the blood, sweat, and tears. There's truly nothing better.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

C: Lying on a big, warm rock next to the ocean on a summer day at our place in southern Maine.

S: Cape Cod

Tell us a little bit about why you are excited to be a 2011 co-captain..

C: As this is my eighth and final season being a Middlebury athlete, I'm more than a little sad to begin this season since I know it will go by too quickly. But, there's nothing more exciting than beginning a new season with a completely fresh slate. Sally and I have already co-captained together this fall in field hockey, and I have nothing but confidence in her leadership and the talent of all my teammates. I am also excited to make the most of our team's tailgates, which are always a smorgasbord of mouthwatering goodies.

S: I am excited to be a 2011 MIDDLAX captain because the amount of talent that my teammates have and the amount of commitment and effort that they show every day can only mean that there are good things to come. I am so excited for our team to gain the sense of earned accomplishment because of our resilience, persistence, optimism, focus and determination. Of course, while doing so, I'm simply just excited to be surrounded by a team who makes me laugh, dance, sing, smile and to create memories that I will never forget.

What is your favorite Middlebury lax moment?

C: Soo many fav moments, but I'd have to say beating Gettysburg last spring is on the top of the list. We were coming off a tough loss in our season opener (cough-thanksmorgan-cough), so beating the currently 2nd ranked team in the nation really helped us get our mojo back. Not to mention Lily had one of the best games I've ever seen a goalie have, aaaand Nam took some baller pics of us in action.

S: Besides beating Ghettysburg last year on their turf, and my freshmen year in the NCAAs...my favorite Middlebury lacrosse moment may be our conditioning run/bike to Chipman last Spring. We never know what our conditioning is going to be but when we hear the name Chipman, a huge knot builds in everyone's stomach. This hill is a mile up and a mile down but with plenty of telephone poles and gates along the way which make great markers for hill sprints. That day, Missy gave us the hardest workout I had ever done on Chipman but it was incredible to accomplish such a challenge with the whole team. The most beautiful part was the faces of Liz, Steph, and Kasey as they rode their bikes (or at least attempted to) up this incredibly steep hill with broken chains, big helmets, tears and all. I have to admit that that was the first time I was actually thrilled to be running up Chipman. I have absolutely no idea how they were making it to the top because I thought I was going to drop dead right then and there from running, but they knew that being on this team meant that you have to find a way, and they did.

This season marks the ten year anniversary of the Middlebury Women's Lacrosse 2001 NCAA Championship win over Amherst. The panthers came back to win the game in overtime 11-10 after being down 3-8 at halftime. The win was what Missy calls, "the biggest comeback I have ever been a part of".

In honor of the Championship, we will be interviewing as many of the 2001 Middlebury players as possible and posting their answers on the blog! Be sure to stay tuned and check the blog for some fun answers and throwback pics!

Becca Brakeley recently competed in the 2011 Portland YMCA Fittest Woman/Man Fundraiser. Becca raised $1000 for the event, earning her the top fundraiser award! All funds raised for the event go directly to the Y to help underprivileged youth attend swimming lessons and summer camp. Overall, she placed 1st in her over 145lb division! The competition was 10 events over two days testing all areas of fitness: strength, balance, agility, speed, endurance, and power.

On day 1, Becca set personal records in each event! Max Deadlift 225 lb, max bench press 125 lbs, max dips- 25 with 75% body weight, 500 m row for time in 1 minute and 49 seconds, and farmer's hold for 1 minute and 47 seconds (hold 75% of body weight as long as you can!).

On day two, Becca placed first in three events: clean and press reps in 1 minute, 3 minute plyometric circuit, and 40lb Kettlebell swing (59 reps in 2 mins! A personal record!). She also placed second in the bench 85lb reps/min @ 17 and survived the squat reps in a minute!

Becca said, "The spirit was fantastic and it was such an honor to be surrounded by such positive people"

MIDD LAX 5v5 Tourney & Clinic

The Middlebury Women's Lacrosse team will be hosting a Clinic and 5v5 Tournament for high school players on Sunday, March 6, 2011 from 12:30-4:30pm. The clinic and tournament will be held at Middlebury College on the Peter Kohn Turf Field.

Payment as well as completed registration form must be received by February 15, 2011. Cost for players to participate is $50. Players may register either as a team (ranging in size from six to ten players) or they may register as individuals and we will place them on a team of independents. A maximum of 30 teams will be allowed to participate - so register ASAP!

The clinic (run by Middlebury Women's Lacrosse players and coaches) will run from 12:30-1:45pm. The 5v5 tournament will run from 1:45-4:30pm.

Players should bring the following with them to the clinic: stick, eye wear, mouthguard, water bottle, and goalie equipment (if applicable). Turf shoes or cross-trainers are recommended for the astroturf playing surface.

This week's featured panther is freshman MIDDfielder, Dani DeMarco. Hailing from Norwell, Mass, Dani brings spunk, speed and silliness to every practice. Read below to learn a little bit more about her:

Midd: What is your favorite color?
Dani: My favorite color is red. I have no idea why it is red because I really like pink and blue better but I have always told myself it was red since I was little and have always answered that it was red so I will stick with that.

Midd: Why did you choose Middlebury?
Dani: The first time I visited Midd, I knew it was the place for me. I told my mom as we were walking around campus that this was the place I was going to go to college... I just had to get in and somehow tell my dad that I wasn't going to go to his alma mater Amherst (sorry dad!). I had always wanted to play lax at a NESCAC school, and I fell in love with Midd when I saw it. I wanted to be a part of an amazing team with amazing coaches, and my dream came true!

Midd: Tell us a little bit about what it’s like to be a Midd-fielder for Middlebury?
Dani: Being a middie for Midd (no pun intended) is suuuper fun but a ton of work. We are always running, which gets difficult, but it is so much fun because we get to be a part of both the defensive end and the offensive end. Being a midfielder also tests the mental component of the game. I am always telling myself that I am not tired and that I can run harder.. but as I tell myself, it only makes you stronger. I love being a Midd-fielder.

Midd: Where is your favorite place to study on campus?
Dani: I usually study in the basement of the library in Bi-Hall. It is a great place to focus and lose all distractions for a while..plus you don't get cell service in the basement which is good for my grades.

Midd: What do you love most about lacrosse?
Dani: I love our team and our coaches. Everyday I am surrounded by awesome people who I know will always have my back. I am very fortunate to be part of such an amazing program that not everybody gets the opportunity to be a part of. I wish that everyone could experience what we have.

Midd: Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Dani: Hmmm... not really anything that I have done all my life, but this year it has become a tradition for Michaela, Heather, Neile and I to sing the song "Encore" by Jason Derulo. I have a solo... it's no big deal though.

Midd: What’s it like to be a freshman and play for Middlebury?
Dani: It is so cool to be a freshman again. I have learned SO much about lacrosse this year.. it is like I have re-learned the game. It is so cool to be able to play with the players that I have read about during high school on the NESCAC and Middlebury websites. At times we have a lot of pressure put on us, but it only makes us better. I think being a freshman is awesome and we're rocking it this year ;) wooohooo 2013!

Midd: Tell us about your favorite Middlebury Lacrosse moment.
Dani: I would have to say that my favorite lacrosse moment at Midd was when we beat the No. 2 division III team in the country--Gettysburg. It had the feeling of a championship game. We played out of our minds and everyone really stepped up to come up with the big W.

Midd: What’s your “favorite” conditioning?
Dani: I love relay races and trivia sprints because they are fun and take your mind off of conditioning. However, Chipman Hill can be quite a thrill at times....

Midd: What has the transition from high school to college been like?
Dani: The transition has been very smooth. I would definitely say that it helps to be part of a team because it gives you a support system and awesome friends. Midd is the perfect fit for me and I am so happy that it worked out so nicely. There is no doubt that the work load is a lot heavier, but college is a lot more fun!

This week's featured panther is Sophomore Attacker, Liz Garry! Hailing from Rye, NY, this spunky attacker always keeps you guessing and on your toes. Here is a little interview to help you get to know her better....

Midd: What is your favorite restaurant in town?
Liz:Favorite restaurant in town would have to be a tie between Storm Cafe and Grapevine, the penne carbonara is unreal, but sometimes nothing beats a Srgt. Peppers.

Midd: What is your favorite class you’ve taken at Midd and why?
Liz:My favorite class so far at Midd is Gender Roles in Popular American Culture. Holly Allen teaches it and she just created such a comfortable and welcoming atmoshpere that no one was afriad to talk up in class.

Midd: Why did you choose Middlebury?
Liz: The first time I saw Midd, it was such a gross rainy day in the summer, yet I got done with talking to Missy and after seeing all the plaques and awards on her wall I knew I would love it here. I came up for one weekend and left just thinking that this was what "college" was. The people here were so incredible, everyone does everything to the best of their ability all the time and everyone has so many different things to bring to the table.

Midd: Tell us a little bit about what it’s like to be a attacker for Middlebury?
Liz: Being an attacker at Midd means a lot of bruised arms. I love playing attack here because its really fast paced and we love to push the limits. It means being ready to go for a ball when you know your gonna get hit and remaining composed under pressure. And our unsettled attack is so much fun to play with, because we have a lot of really good natural connections and can make things happen without running plays.

Midd: Where is your favorite place to study on campus?
Liz: When I have actual work to get done I go to the carrols on the first floor, they're very hidden and no one will know your there or in the old part of the library of Axinn. But most of the time its the second floor carrols, where not much gets done but hanging out with your friends.

Midd: Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Liz: For breakfast I have a cinnamon raisin bagel with peanut butter. I always go for a walk for a little while to focus on the game and relax for a little.

Midd: What’s it like being a two-sporter?
Liz: It's incredible, I can't imagine not playing one or the other. It gets busy at times, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Both teams are different but every season is always so much fun, the bus trips, hotel stays, and preseason are just a few of the things that make playing two sports here so amazing, its never a dull moment and always keeps ya on your toes.

Midd: Tell us about your favorite Middlebury Lacrosse moment.
Liz: I'd have to say beating Gettysburg this year, we were coming off a tough start to the season and it was such an incredible team win, every person on the team played a part, it was just so much fun. Lily played unreal, and both the defense and the offense worked so well together.

Midd: What’s your “favorite” conditioning?
Liz: I'd have to go with trivia sprints, one day the sophomores will actually get a few right.

Midd: What’s something you want the alums to know?
Liz: They should all come back and visit!!!! And we try our best to keep the tradition of Midd Lax going strong!

One Day Without Shoes...

On Thursday, April 8th, our team participated in One Day Without Shoes, a day to spread awareness about the impact a simple pair of shoes can have on a child's life. For warm-up and our first drill, our whole team, coaches included, ran around barefoot. Conn College

Despite the nail-biter against Buff State, the team was raring to go by the next day for our game against Conn College. We came out hot in the beginning of the first half, scoring four unanswered goals, but by half time the Camels were able to sneak a few goals under their belt, making it 8-4. The second half went much better for us, as we pulled away from the camels for a 14-6 win. There was a little added pressure to the game, however, as the assistant coach of the Camels, Channing Weymouth (the best Adopted Alum evah), was a former Middlebury Panther who graduated in ’06. Channing wasn’t the only former Panther present at the game—in fact there were four others from the class of ‘06! Miche Bergofsky, Elizabeth Renehan, Ali Perencevich, and Schuyler Winstead all returned last weekend to their old stomping grounds. It was an incredibly joyous reunion for Eileen, whose feathers were all ruffled with delight at the sight of her old keeper, Ali P. Saturday turned out to be a very happy ending to a long, but successful, spring break trip. Not only was it a treat to hang out with our Alums, but we ended the week 4-0 despite the numerous illnesses we had to overcome. We are more prepared than ever to face this week’s competition—Babson and Colby—so stay tuned. Over and out.

Spring Break Fun....

After a glorious night of sleep Thursday night in the luxurious beds at the Hilton, we made our way down to the lobby for breakfast. Breakfast was certainly an upgrade-- they even had all the ingredients to make a dessert waffle....as well as a yogurt bar and various other luxuries that the Gettysburg hotel had not offered. Soon after, we boarded the bus to RPI, where we would play Buffalo State. When we took to the field, we were disappointed that there was no music playing to pump us up, so Dani quickly ran off to the locker room to get our speakers. Because of the flu epidemic plaguing our team, many of our players were still recovering and not able to play, and we did a good job of adapting, especially on the defensive end of the field. Though they were intimidating in their orange and black sweatsuits, we managed to pull out a win. We didn't play our best game of lacrosse, but in the words of Lily Nguyen "a win is a win is a win." After showering, we enjoyed a quick to-go tailgate and set off back to Midd! It felt good to get off the bus, but we will certainly missed the company of our bus driver, Joe, who was awesome, giving us candy on the reg and adapting to the sometimes overpowering odors that permeated the bus. Also, he must have a very strong immune system to have withstood the flu virus as it made its way around our team! Back in our locker room, we did some quick prep for the game against Conn and prepared for a good nights sleep in our own beds!! As we went to bed, we all mentally prepared ourselves for the next days games and all hoped for an undefeated spring break!!

The Day Before Game Day....

We woke up for the final at the wonderful five-star hotel in Gettysburg at 7:30, had a gourmet breakfast for the last time and departed to the Gettysburg field. We had a good practice working on our defense in preparation for Buffalo State even though a “man down” for part of it. This gave everyone an opportunity to step into different positions in defense. After our last practice of spring break, we showered, and then headed to the spectacular cereal filled dining hall at Gettysburg. Because of the sick crew we planned on renting a car so we wouldn’t get the whole team sick, but fortunately the storm had calmed so it ended up not being necessary. We then boarded the bus for our 5 ½ hour bus ride to Troy, NY. We watched the beginning of the Wrestler although it was vetoed part-way through. WE then managed to complete Almost Famous and Breakfast Club. We were then warmly greeted by the DeFazio’s crew and took “za” to the face. After dinner, we arrived at our new hotel which was a nice upgrade. We then congregated and played some charades where blue unfortunately dominated although white’s gestures were much more entertaining. We had our scout, and then everyone headed back to their rooms where we all fell asleep dreaming of our last away win of spring break!!!

Wednesday of Spring Break....

I am a solo blogger today. At the beginning of the day we had 21 healthy lacrosse players and now, by the end of the day we are down to 18 players. The flu seems to have spread throughout our team, but I know we will all be healthy by our Friday game against Buffalo State!!

After a great win against Gettysburg yesterday, we all trekked back to the field for a “get her done” practice, as Missy would call it. Afterwards we had a blue and white team activity where we got in our blue and white teams and dressed up four freshmen in their “Easter’s best”. Danny played the role of the Playboy vixen bunny, while Ellen and Alice both put on great representations of decorated eggs. Heather was the most normal looking Easter bunny, so she was awarded the “best bunny” outfit by the judges.

At 1:30, we headed back to the field for another practice. After showering and cleaning ourselves up, the seniors assigned very unique costumes to the rookies who had to wear them to bowling and dinner. We again participated in a blue and white bowling competition, in which the white team won by two points (the team’s averages of 92 versus 90). Overall Missy was the high bowler, on the white team with a score of 142, and Danny was close behind (with a score of 44). We finished the day with a great dinner at the Blue Patriot and then came home to the Country Inn & Suites for our last night in Gettysburg. Off to Troy, New York tomorrow.

Monday March 22

We wish a ha-ap-py birthday, a joyous and celebrated bi-ir-thday. TO YOUUUUUUU, DEAR RACHEL, may you live a long, long lifeeeeeee! Today was Rachel’s birthday! Hope she enjoys her Crazy Creeks (or whatever those chairs are called).

We started the day with the delicious complimentary breakfast at the Comfort Inn and Suites—the waffles and cereal prepared us for a three-hour practice. The rain clouds rolled in right as we stepped on the field, and it altered between little drizzles and random downpours. Kasey, Margaret and Dani still put on sunscreen (spf 70, duh). But, as Missy always says, there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing, so we hustled through practice and seriously prepared ourselves for Gettysburg the next day.

After practice, we enjoyed the fine dining in the dining hall of Gettysburg, including hamburgers, grilled cheese, pizza, Caesar salad, capt’n crunch berries and OF COURSE the many selections of ice cream they had to offer. After lunch, our Tour of the Gettysburg Battlefields commenced, which Eileen thoroughly enjoyed. Our tour guide, Woody, gave us a view of the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg, which was very informative!

We walked from the hotel to T.G.I.Fridays for dinner, where together we ordered probably everything on the menu, including a cup of dirt with worms and we celebrated Rachel’s birthday for real, with the help of the waitresses. To round out the evening, we gathered in the hotel dining room to watch the freshmen perform their rookie skit! The rookie’s portrayed different members of the senior class and the coaching staff at a wedding from the future. Rookie skits are a spring break tradition, and this year’s class performed outstandingly!

After the skits, we did a little more prep for our impending game, and we will let you know the results of that prep in tomorrow’s blog… stay tuned!

Sunday, March 21st of Spring Break...

Sunday morning we woke up feeling good about our Wesleyan win but not sure of how our legs would be. After sleeping in until 7:30, we had two practices. Luckily, the weather was beautiful. Our team worked on goggle and glove tans while participating in blue and white competitions. Although blue was victorious for the day, the teams remained neck-and-neck overall. Later, we ventured to the Gettysburg dining hall and, unbeknownst to us, sat next to their women's lacrosse team. Side note: their soft-serve collection is epic - 10 flavors that any college campus would love to have. Thank goodness it was Sunday because all of our dedicated "Lent-ers" could indulge themselves in chocolate. After two or three flavors apiece, we went back to the hotel to shower before heading to see Alice in Wonderland. Tim Burton reminded us that whenever we doubt ourselves as athletes, we should just think of six impossible things before breakfast. We all fell asleep thinking about the impossible things we could accomplish. Number one: slay the Jabberwocky... aka, Gettysburg.

Spring Break Begins...

For the week over spring break we've had players blogging...here is the first one! Enjoy!

Well we got our spring break off to a great start with some “wicked good” pizza, polishing off 9 pizzas en route to Wesleyan. Food always has been and remains a consistent theme through the break. As if we weren’t already stuffed enough, we were greeted by the Heritages at the hotel who treated us with some scrumptious cupcakes and ice cream…and its only day one. Following our food frenzy, Caitlin McCormick gave us a great speech on “defining moments” and reminded us to always be honest with ourselves. The team carried her words and that motto into the game the next day against the Wesleyan Cardinals. It was unseasonably warm March day, with the temperatures reaching close to 70 degrees.

The Midd Panthers ruled the field from the very beginning and dominated with confidence as the score ended with 14-7, favoring Midd. Wes thought they had a hand on us when they brought the game within three goals but with a strong defense that covered all open cuts, offense that denied their transition, and had accurate shots, Wes was quickly quieted. The parents provided an amazing to-go tailgate with sandwiches, fruit, Gatorade, and plenty of water to hydrate the tired players. So the team quickly loaded the bus, kissed spectators goodbye, and got ready for the five-hour bus ride to Gettysburg that awaited us.

On our five-hour bus ride to Gettysburg, we began our blue-white team competitions. We started off with the great game of Catch Phrase. White pulled through with the win in this game and has continued to dominate blue on the total score so far this week. Day 1—White: 1 Blue: 0

Featured Panther--Catherine Gotwald ('10)

This week our featured panther is Catherine Gotwald, a senior captain from Alexandria, Virginia. Catherine has been a stalwart defender for us over the past 4 years, so here is a little look into her life:

Midd: What is your favorite restaurant in town?
Catherine: Grapevine Grille, though apparently its technically not a restaurant. It has the best sandwiches EVER! and the best everything else for that matter.

Midd: What is your favorite class you’ve taken at Midd and why?
Catherine: Probably Modern Art with Professor Hoving because it applied the ideas of post 1950s art to the artworks featured around campus.

Midd: What will you miss about Midd when you graduate?
Catherine: The people, my teammates, friends, the fall, going on runs down the dirt road past porter, Jterm, Ups...Everything!!

Midd: Tell us a little bit about what it’s like to be a defender for Middlebury?
Catherine: I love playing defense, especially at Midd. We have many team defenses that we can turn to, but our individual defensive tactics remain the same. Our reliance on each other in team defense translates off the field as well.

Midd: Where is your favorite place to study on campus?
Catherine: I have writers block from my thesis carrell right now, so not there. Probably one of the comfy chairs in Axinn or at the Juice Bar.

Midd: Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Catherine: hmm...nothing too intense. I like to do the crossword at breakfast. Then stretch for a really long time in the locker room and review the scout.

Midd: Why did you choose Middlebury?
Catherine: Before I even visited Middlebury, I knew it was the school I wanted to go to. There wasn't a specific reason, just a feeling.

Midd: Tell us about your favorite Middlebury Lacrosse moment over the past 4 years.
Catherine: TCNJ. Hands down. Also, solidly beating Colby last year in the NCAA tournament felt so great!!

Midd: Do you have any big plans for next year or this summer after graduation?
Catherine: Jobwise, still working on that...but I'm going to Vail again, and I cant wait!! GO TEAM WILD!! I also told Mimi I would run the Lake Placid half marathon with her right after the season...we'll see how that goes.

This past weekend we lost to Bates in our season opener. While it's never easy to lose, it was hard not to be happy for the cute married couple, Brett Allen and Heidi (Howard) Allen. The coaching duo and their team outplayed us but made us aware of the things we need to work on going into this weekend's game against the Wesleyan Cardinals. This past fall, Missy and I went on a hike with the seniors up Snake Mountain. The view was absolutely beautiful! We all wore our bright colors (as you can see in the pictures) as to not be mistaken for deer since it was hunting season! Here are some pictures from the hike:

Just wanted to let you know that we plan to have video webcasts available for all women’s lacrosse home games this year. The games will be available on a pay-per-view basis at $6/game. Often there will not be any broadcasters calling the game, but if available, the broadcast will be carried. You can also follow the game with live stats as well. Keep in mind, if there is rain or rain in the forecast, games will not be available.

The following page will keep you posted with any live coverage (video/audio/stats) of women’s lacrosse games this season.

Featured Player--Michaela Colbert ('13)

Every week we are going to "feature a panther", and conduct a little interview. This week's chosen player is Michaela Colbert, a freshman midfielder from Topsfield, Mass. Here is a little look into what it's like to not only be Michaela, but also what it's like to be on the Middlebury lacrosse team.

Panther: What is your favorite color?
Michaela: lime green or bright yellow, depends on my mood.

Panther: What does our season quote mean to you: "To get what you you’ve never had, you must do what you’ve never done.”
Michaela: To reach new things, you can't expect to achieve goals that have never happened before by doing the same routine that clearly hasn't you gotten there yet. You have to do what it takes, like running up the lovely Chipman "Mountain".

Panther: What do you love most about lacrosse?
Michaela: That I can be in the worst mood before practice and once I step onto the field I snap out of it to play. Also how winners can't win with only by-the-book skills, but with an intensity and desire that makes players stand out and be successful.

Panther: What’s it like being a Middlebury Lacrosse Player?
Michaela: Being a part of a family of awesome girls that have the common goal of being the best we can be and push each other.

Panther: Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Michaela: Not really, I like to sing out loud to relax, think about the game ahead, and I have to have my gloves and goggles on when I walk out.

Panther: What has the adjustment from high school to college lacrosse been like for you?
Michaela: Being surrounded by amazing lacrosse players to watch and learn from, being a rookie again feels good. I kind of laugh at the times I was nervous thinking about doing 3x300's after practice in high school. Those were the times....

Panther: What are you most looking forward to about this season?
Michaela: Showing other lacrosse teams what Middlebury Lacrosse 2010 has up our sleeves.... ;) and owning the field.

Panther: What's it like to be a Midfielder at Middlebury?
Michaela: To be knowledgeable in both attack and defense and that your full presence is required in every scenario.

Panther: The best advice I ever received is.....
Michaela: Make the best of every situation. And to go to Middlebury.

Panther: How about the best meal you have had in a dining hall at Middlebury...
Michaela: Oh there have been so many I can't think of one. But since I have to....Grilled chicken in buttered tri-colored tortellini, apple slices with peanut butter, chocolate milk, and peppermint stick ice cream for dessert.

A Successful Weekend!

This past weekend we participated in 4 scrimmages at Hamilton. We scrimmaged Onondaga, Hamilton, Ithaca and Buffalo State. It was a really great opportunity for us to see what we need to work on as well as what we already do well.

On Sunday, we held our annual lacrosse clinic and had our biggest turnout ever! Thank you to all girls who showed up with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Also, a HUGE thanks to our team for bringing so much energy to the clinic! Here are some pictures...

This past Feb Break, Carrie Sparkes ('10) and I traveled with a few other people to Nicaragua with a non-profit called Lacrosse The Nations. It was truly a life-changing experience. We spent a week playing and teaching lacrosse within the La Chureca community, which is the community trash dump that has existed for over 40 years. Lacrosse the Nations just returned from another amazing trip to La Chureca. The LtN team, comprised of members from the Advisory Board and a small contingency of Middlebury students and alums, spent time developing and implementing the after-school lacrosse program at the School of Hope.

The following are some reflections from Carrie Sparkes, a Middlebury Girls Lacrosse Captain who joined us in La Chureca...

"I came to Nicaragua hoping to use a sport that has influenced my life to connect with the community in La Chureca. Yet in sharing a sport that has influenced my life enormously and in giving my time, I have received gifts that leave me far richer than when I arrived. I’m not richer in money, status, or any marker in our western society. Instead I’m richer in lessons learned, perspectives realized and a whole new outlook on priorities in my life.
The Children of La Chureca taught me:
•To live with intention. My actions affect those around me. Energy and enthusiasm (and laughs!) are contagious.
•To have passion for what I do and the opportunities I am blessed to have.
•This magical game of lacrosse has the power to bring people together.
•To treasure family. A community who has little in material wealth taught me how to look after and take care of loved ones.
•In the midst of darkness, always find the light. If the residents of La Chureca can find light and joy in life- so can I.
•Anyone in the world can be wealthy; Wealthy in pure, meaningful, genuine relationships, compassion and love.
•No matter where you are, kids just want to be kids, and should be given that opportunity.
•Life is beautiful. We just need to stop more often to realize it.

Though my week in La Chureca brought me a sense of hope and peace, the urgency of the dire situation must not be overlooked. As I galloped like a caballo (horse) on my way to the field with a child on my back and one in each hand I stopped dead when I rounded the corner. A mountain of trash towered over the playing field. It took me a minute to collect myself and then continue onto the field. The kids couldn’t understand why I stopped or seemed startled. We must not grow comfortable or accept the dump in Nicaragua as an appropriate place for anyone to live.

A week in La Chureca rocked my world and made me anxious to see the power of our constantly growing sport. Yet as the sport and a week in La Chureca have changed my life, we must continue to work tirelessly to find a solution to change theirs. I left a little part of me in the heart of La Chureca and I simply cannot wait to return. For now I will let it all sink in and seek out opportunities to share my stories and raise awareness within the Middlebury community."

Heidi Howard ('99) was married to Brett Allen this past December 19th! Congratulations to the happy couple! Brett is the head women's volleyball and lacrosse coach at Bates. Heidi is now working there as well as an associate director of donor programs in the office of college advancement. Although Heidi will be helping out a little with Brett's team, we know her allegiance is still with Middlebury!! There were many midd lax alums at the wedding so here are some pictures!

Portland YMCA Strongest Woman!

Becca Brakeley ('04) recently participated in the Portland YMCA's Strongest Man/Woman competition and Fundraiser and WON!!!! She was first in her weight class and Strongest Woman overall! Congrats!! The details from her are below:

What: 2 days, 10 events measuring all areas of fitness including strength, power, endurance, balance and coordination!

Divisions: Men's over and under 195 lbs, Woman's under and over 148 lbs, M & W Masters (I was in Women's heavy weight division :)

Events: Max squat, max bench press, max reps overhead Barbell press, Max reps upright tricep dips, Flexed arm hang for time, Farmer's Barbell hold for time, deadlifts reps/min, Bench press reps/min, clean and press reps/min, 3 minute plyometric circuit.

Recap: It was an awesome event with 40 participants! So many inspiring people- especially the Woman's Masters division!

There were 7 people in my weight class (only 2 of us under 200 lbs!) including many mothers, professionals and women from all walks of life! My biggest competition was vs. a 6'2'' 220 lb woman!

Middlebury Team to Offer Clinic

2010 Middlebury College Annual Women’s Lacrosse Clinic
Sunday, March 7th, 2010

The Middlebury College women’s lacrosse program will offer its annual clinic on Sunday, March 7th. The players clinic (girls in 5-12 grade) will take place from 12:30-3:30pm and the coaches clinic from 12pm-1:00pm.

Skills to be taught will include catching, throwing, cutting, groundballs, shooting, checking, offense and defense strategy, goalkeeping, competitive situations AND more! Peter Kohn Passes Away

As many of you have probably already heard, our beloved Peter Kohn passed away on August 5 at a University of Pennsylvania Hospital after suffering a heart attack a few days prior. Peter will be greatly missed and every time we step out on "Peter Kohn Field" we will be reminded of what an amazing inspiration and person Peter was to everyone who knew him.

There have been many articles published about Peter and I urge you to google him and read everything that's out there. Memories of Peter:

I remember Pete Kohn as a good soul, always ready to help out, encourage and support. He had unshakable faith in the athletes and people with whom he worked, and his faith was contagious. Indeed, it was more powerful than I appreciated at the time. When he gave the field hockey team one of his typical, enthusiastic send offs from the steps of our coach bus, there was, I'm certain, a cynical part of me that believed our role was to respond to him with equal enthusiasm because HE needed that. Looking back, I marvel at the effect of his unequivocal belief in us, and his equally affecting ability to convey pure emotions. He expressed absolute certainty that we could accomplish anything we set out to do, just as he showered us with unchecked sympathy following a well battled loss, or a bad day. He cast his guileless support to team after after team, and to player after player, day after day after day after day.

18 years later, it seems that the cynical part of me suffered a myopia of youth. Pete's gifts played out in the short game by boosting our confidence and making us fight harder on the field. Pete's gifts play out in the long game, too. He set a high bar. Pete believed in people. He worked hard. He shared all of what he had, and he shared it with integrity, sincerity, dedication, kindness, constancy, and warmth.

We are all better people for having known Peter Kohn, and I suspect that this legacy would please him. I can see his signature smile now, always equal parts humility, joy and surprise.

If there is a team of Angels up above, they are about to get better. :)

I have to tell you - I went out for my run yesterday and was again - thinking of Pete as I had just read your email saying the funeral was that day and to wear a bird feather. As I stretched in front of my garage post - a single, spectacularly-blue feather floated down out of the sky and landed directly in front of me where I stretched. While we have a lot of blue jays around our house - I have NEVER seen a single feather anywhere. So - it was clearly a feather from Pete reminding me to play hard and bring home the bacon.
Made me smile. Even in California Pete is watching.

Our last player of the week this season is Francie Madsen Maletis '99. She answers some questions for us:

Name, occupation, and where you’re living:
Francie (Madsen) Maletis, Marketing/Sales - Oaktree Capital, San Francisco, CA.

What you've been doing since graduating 10 years ago?
7.5 years in NYC, 1 year in VT/NH, 1.5 years in San Francisco. I worked for a hedge fund in New York City for the first two years out of school before going to my current firm, Oaktree Capital. I sell alternative investment funds to institutional clients (endowments, foundations, pensions). I continued to date John, my Middlebury boyfriend, for another six and a half years after graduation before we got married. We spent our first year of marriage back in Vermont (Upper Valley) where he completed his MBA at Tuck (Dartmouth). In September of 2007, we moved together to San Francisco. And in the last 2 years, we've added a black Labrador, Quimby, and a little boy, Morgan (4 months), to the mix!

What was your favorite Midd lacrosse moment?
There are a lot. But I think that winning the NCAA's for the first time in '97 and breaking the longest win streak in NCAA history (I checked the stat - 102 wins, which spanned from April 14, 1991 until May 18, 1997 when we won;) ) We stepped it up to another level that day. And I believe every team since then has been the better for it.

What was your favorite 1999 season memory?
Besides winning the NCAA's again on John's Hopkins Field? I loved everything about the season, starting with spring break. We were a very close team - I respected every single teammate very much and still do. I even loved the long road trips in the vans!!

What does it means to say you are a Midd lax alum?
It means you are part of an elite community of friends that you can feel proud of every day. Middlebury may be a small school and the lacrosse team even smaller, but you'd be amazed how well known and respected the program is...even across the country! I miss our days on the field together, but the friendships and support we started in Middlebury carries on.

What is the best advice Missy Foote ever gave you?
There are too many lines of wisdom to recount just one. What I loved most about Missy was that she was so much more than a coach. She supported you on and off the field. She was not only your coach, but also another parent looking out after you...and a friend. She saw you first as a individual, and then as a player on her team.

What does the word “TEAM” means to you?
Learning how to encourage, challenge and strengthen each other to achieve much more than any one individual player could. A support system that extends well beyond the parameters of the field. Work hard together, play hard together, have fun together. Friends for life.

What is something you want current team to know?
Make sure to pause often and take a mental picture of your days on the lacrosse field. Breathe in the crisp air and look at the mountains. Enjoy and realize how special you have it. What you are learning now will carry with you long after graduation. It's a great day to be a panther!

Our Season Comes to an End

Our team saw its season come to an end in an NCAA Regional Final game with Hamilton for the second straight season. It was an exciting and emotional weekend as we played Colby for the 3rd time this season in the second round game on Saturday. We devised a new game plan and it worked as we beat Colby with a convincing score of 9-3. On Sunday, we were up against Hamilton, the defending National Champions. After a hard fought game, we lost 13-9. It has been a great season and we thank you fans for your continued support!

NCAA's!!!

We have earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament! We will host Keene State in a first-round game on Wednesday, May 6th at 4:30. The winner of the game heads to Colby this weekend for the NCAA Regionals.

Moment of Appreciation

Lacrosse alum Meredith McLean Gramelspacher ‘93 shares with us a moment of appreciation for good old conditioning practices and how she (as most alums would agree) never thought the day would come:

I happened to have a great 10 mile run last night (am training for a half marathon)
and I couldn't help but chuckle the first few miles because I was running right behind some who ran just like Mary Blanchard. It was one of those moments that brought me
right back to FH and lax at Midd when runs stunk and I spent a lot of time looking at the backs of people's feet and this person's gait was EXACTLY like Mary's! Maybe you had to be there, or maybe you know exactly what I'm talking about since some people have very distinct running styles, but I laughed/thought it was funny.

The other thing that made me chuckle was around Mile 8 when I thought to myself I am actually enjoying/having a great 10 mile run! Missy will attest that when I played at Midd, there was no way in H-E-double hockey sticks you would have EVER heard me say that... I didn't even like runs to Porter Hospital, let alone Eddie Horse Farm, and Chipman Hill...don't even go there. Back then Missy once told me, "someday you will
run a marathon" and I responded that she was nuts! But she was right! I did run one, in 1997, and have run 7 half marathons since, and am running my 8th in a month.

You can tell all your players this season that dislike conditioning as much as I did that this is what will become of you once you graduate and become a working mother of two kids... you will have flashbacks to college practices and they will be fond memories... and, more importantly, you will be grateful for the strength and determination that came from all of the hard work; I had no clue at the time what a
great foundation I was building for life.

Alumnae of the Week

This week's Alum of the week is Jessa Martin McIntosh '00. The former All-American is second in the Alumnae Series and will be speaking to our team this Friday night. She answers some questions:

Name, occupation, where you’re living:
Jessa Martin McIntosh, Management Consultant at Stone + Company, Boston, MA

What you've been doing for 10 years:
I've been living in Boston since college, where I re-met my husband (we were classmates at Deerfield together.) I got a masters in Sport Psychology and did three years of a PhD in Counseling Psychology at Boston University. While in school, I coached field hockey and lacrosse at Babson College with fellow teammate Kully Hagerman Reardon '99. After school I jumped from academia to business and worked as a consultant at Deloitte Consulting, but being a road warrior wasn't for me, so I moved to a boutique management consulting firm where I work with senior level leaders and their teams doing strategic planning and leadership development.

Favorite Midd lacrosse moment:
Giving Eileen her first beer during "rookie appreciation" night and subsequently having her hang on my belt loops at our parties so that I could dunk her beak in my solo cup.

Favorite 1999 season memory:
Our 11 hr van ride down to Virginia where we learned all the lyrics to 2-Pac's "Changes" and Jay-z's "Can I get a what what"-- that was the ghettos van's shining moment :) I should probably say something about winning a National Championship, but that was a given--we knew that would happen--it was all the things that happened during the season and leading up to those last seconds while we held off Amherst that ensured we were going to win.

What it means to say you are a Midd lax alum:
Whenever I say I played lacrosse at Middlebury, I can't help but feel a huge sense of pride. Its not just because we won a bunch of National titles, but that I am part of this unbelievable legacy of women who always thought about the team, not just about the wins. It was never about individuals, it was ALWAYS about team. The collective sense of confidence, pride and selflessness is what makes me feel so proud to be part of such a strong legacy.

Best advice Missy Foote ever gave you:
Wow, that is a tough one because after 2 seasons for four years we spend a lot of time together (although, I never rode in her van because she didn't like ghetto music). So the best advice Missy ever gave me is not something she said but something I learned from her philosophy of always making practice harder than games so that we were over prepared and ready for any challenge. For me, even now, I use this philosophy to ensure I'm mentally and physically prepared for whatever I face. For example, still today, I deliberately run when its freezing and/or raining or even if I feel like I might be getting sick--because what if on the day that I have to run in that race I've been training for it is raining or I'm not feeling 100%--I already know what it feels like and what I need to be thinking to do my best b/c I put myself in that situation already.

What TEAM means to you:
This is really simple--Team, for me, means trust and pride. It did not cross my mind to not play my hardest for each and every teammate in order to make them look good on the field (and off the field)--no matter what I had to do, I was going make sure my teammate was set up for success. I also knew that everyone else out on the field was thinking the exact same thing, and that is trust. This is something the '99 team was especially good at and had tremendous pride in.

Something you want current team to know:
You are part of an amazing legacy that is only getting stronger through what you accomplish together in every game, every run up chipman, every endless drill, every party you throw, every van ride and every WIN you succeed in together. The legacy is about team.

Spring Break - Day 8

30 hours of Premier Bus Riding...14 hours of practicing...132 hours of game time playing and countless hours spent laughing at who knows what, eating too many Cadbury eggs, making cardboard boxes into chariots, dressing up as southern’s finest, prank calling, and singing new birthday songs...brings us to our final day of SB 09.

We spent our final night in New Haven in a food coma after we ate too much at the Demmerle’s Thursday night. We woke up to a beautiful, sunny day...the perfect game day to be a panther. Our competition was the Colby Mules. After last year’s loss to them in the NESCAC tourney and coming off a tough loss against W & L, the team was pumped and raring to go.

The game was hard fought on both ends and we traded goals with the Mules through both halves. Colby tied the game at 8 with only a few minutes left and sending the game into over time. Colby scored in the first 3 minute period, and Liz Garry put one in for us in the second 3 minute period. Then we went into sudden death overtime and had some good looks but couldn't get the ball in the back of the net. Blair made a few huge saves but Colby was able to score to end the game 10-9. Although we were disappointed to lose, we were pleased with the way we played hard the entire game, all 71 minutes of it!

Then after a delicious tailgate and catching up with friends and family, we loaded the bus for our final stretch back to Midd. We watched Twilight, and pulled out some great quotes that will be re-used again again all season long. Joe got us back safely, and we were all so happy to be home! We made the mad dash off the bus to breathe in some VT fresh air, unpack our game bags, and unload the piles of food that we had accumulated over the past week. It feels good to be home, but the memories we made during SB 09 are ones that will stick with us forever.

Spring Break - Day 7

We got an early start on our day today starting practice at 8am at Franklin and Marshall. We worked on a new play, which seems like it is going to prove to be very successful. We were “quick like bunnies”, showered and loaded the bus.

We were lucky enough to have a delicious lunch prepared for us by the Sparkes’. We stopped at their house in Radnor, PA for about an hour where we enjoyed salad, pasta, deli sandwiches, and lots of delicious deserts. We got back on the bus again heading toward Greenwich, CT. When we arrived in Greenwich we got an hour to explore the town, do some shopping, then we headed over to Alice Demmerle’s house for another delicious meal prepared by her mom and sisters. We were spoiled with chicken, salad, delicious bread, and again, many, many desserts. It was a great time hanging out, watching movies, talking, and spending time with a few family members that came to the dinner as well. After our enjoyable dinner, we headed back to the hotel in New Haven for our scout on Colby and a good night sleep before our big game!
